Yo-Yo Dieting - Are You in Need of a Weight Loss Change?

It's the stereotypical phrase that describes millions of Americans today. The Yo-Yo Dieter is the dieter that starts and stops every diet under the sun in hopes of one day finding the "perfect" diet to shed all their weight away. Many people unfortunately don't realize the impact yo-yo dieting has on your body and how important it is to find a solid and sound weight loss plan to get you to a healthier weight.

The key to finding the one plan that will work for you is a little bit of research and determination once you find one that's working. The research phase includes finding a reputable diet to follow that has proven results that you are sure you can make work for you. This should include knowing about all the possible side effects you may possibly come into contact with when starting a new plan. For instance, when low carb dieters start the Atkins diet, many find it extremely difficult to adjust for the first week or so, then realize it becomes much easier. Another aspect you must think about is how you will maintain the weigh loss after it's been melted away. Can you follow a low carbohydrate diet the rest of your life without going insane? I'm sure not everyone can answer that question favorably. This is why it's very important to start and follow a plan you know you can make into a lifestyle.

The other aspect is the determination factor it takes to stick to a weight loss plan when it shows no signs of working. When your dialed in and doing everything right, yet no weight is dropping or it's not dropping as fast as it should, many people quit. This is a key period in which determination must prevail to keep going towards the final goal. Everyones body is different and will experience changes in it's own time. You must stay determined to succeed in weight loss, as without this important attribute you will find yourself a chronic yo-yo dieter for life. Good luck!

What Cows Know About Weight Loss That We Have Forgotten

I want to talk to you about cows and what they can teach us about weight loss, or more specifically, fat loss. While it may not be obvious, we can learn a very important lesson from cows.

Not so many years ago, cattle were herded across the central plains. North in the summer and south in the winter, following the good weather. While moving several thousand head of cattle on horseback, it was impossible to bring food for the animals, so the route taken had to include grasslands or prairies where the cattle could graze.

With the advent of cattle ranches and barbed wire, it became increasingly more difficult to run cattle across the open range. Instead of moving the cattle to the food, ranchers began to bring the food to the cattle. With a change in diet came a change in the meat and dairy products as well.

You know the old saying "you are what you eat"... well, the same is true for cattle. Cows that consume a diet of fresh grasses instead of dry cattle "feed" end up consuming a higher concentration of many nutrients as well. One in particular that I'd like to discuss with you is a fatty acid called conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA.

Throughout time, people who ate beef and drank milk from cows that were "range fed" ended up consuming a healthy amount of CLA. Since then, the amount of CLA that cattle consume has decreased dramatically, and so they are passing less along to those of us further down the food-chain.

So, what does that mean for us? Well, once upon a time, people were able to make meat and dairy a part of a healthy diet, and that beef and milk actually helped them to stay lean.

The actual way in which CLA keeps animals (like us) lean is still somewhat of a mystery, but through observation, scientists are able to see that it works... and it works very well. A double blind study of obese humans in Norway showed that after 12 weeks, the group that took a little over 3 grams of CLA per day had a statistically significant decrease in body fat mass (BFM) and a statistically significant increase in lean body mass (LBM). These results were acheived without a significant lifestyle change.

Now I'm not going to suggest that anyone tries to lose weight without making significant lifestyle changes. Changes should include (but not be limited to) a decrease in calories per day and an increase in exercise per week. If people can get significant results without making a lifestyle change, what can they do when the two are working together?

I've been hearing about CLA for years now from friends who have lost pounds, fat and inches, and I've begun to take it myself as well, finally. I'm walking thirty minutes a day, five days per week, reducing my caloric intake, and taking CLA three times per day. I'm looking forward to updating you on my progress, and I hope you'll join me as well.

Before you decide, let's look at what we know about CLA and its effects. Studies show that CLA reduces body fat and weight in four ways:

* By decreasing the amount of fat that is stored after eating
* By increasing the rate of fat breakdown in fat cells
* By increasing the rate of fat metabolism
* By decreasing the number of fat cells

In addition to decreasing fat, CLA also helps to increase lean muscle mass. This helps in two ways, first of all, muscle looks better and more natural than fat, and secondly lean muscle burns calories. It's a synergistic effect that compounds as you lose more fat and increase muscle.

Give CLA a try, you've got nothing to lose but fat!

Small Changes Equal Weight Loss

Small changes add up. In changing your diet and exercise plan in small steps, you build successes to achieve your weight loss goal. If you undertake too much too quickly, it rarely lasts. Don't give up. Change your strategy to small steps rather than one huge leap. When you successfully incorporate one small change, move on to another. You build momentum by incorporating small changes in your life.

1. Water as your first beverage of choice. After you've consumed your morning coffee or tea to get you going for the day, drink water. Water is critical in maximizing your weight loss. You can drink flavored water for a change of pace.

2. Fresh fruit instead of juice. If you enjoy orange juice or other juices, switch to eating the real deal of the fruit. Juice packs lots of calories in a small glass and doesn't provide you a sense of satisfaction the way eating the fruit does. You'll consume less calories, enjoy the sense of eating, feel fuller from the fruit rather than the liquid, plus you'll add important fiber from eating the fruit.

3. Write it down. Carry a small notepad with you and log in every meal, bite, taste and anything that you eat. By keeping track of what you consume, it will make you think twice before eating something. If you have to write something down in a log, many times you don't want to see it in your log so you won't see it on your waist either. Writing it down can also show you exactly what you are eating. A bite or taste sometimes doesn't register with us. In a log, you become very aware of what you're doing.

4. Check your steps. Buy a pedometer and wear it every day. Health experts recommend 10,000 steps each day for maximum health. Take your first day and use it as your base number. Set your goal to get in an additional 1,000 steps per day. Keep track how many steps you have each day. You can make it a game by logging the steps you make each day.

5. Lose your taste for soda. Soda scores a big zero in weight loss. Soft drinks contain astounding amounts of sugar and sodium. Plus, they are void of nutrition and do nothing to assist in filling you up. If you must drink soft drinks, go for the diet version. Just like many other things, you acquire a taste for something and you can lose it too. By cutting out soda from your day, you'll save hundreds of calories which result in weight loss.

6. Get a team of support. You don't have to lose weight alone. There are many resources available to you. First, turn to your family and friends and request their support. You can also hire your own weight loss coach. You can work with your coach to create a program that is best for you, what you like, what you prefer, and what works best for you. You can also join an online support group. There are many people waiting to partner with you to achieve your weight loss goals.

7. Make your coffee work for you. I used to love those flavored creamers. I would joke that I added coffee to my flavored creamer. Unfortunately, I was right. It wasn't until I kept a food journal that I noticed how much I was actually consuming. The flavored creamers, whether non-fat or in any form, are full of sugar. I was consuming enough carbs to count for one-half of my day. I strategy that I incorporated is to use nonfat powdered creamer and sugar-free flavored syrups in my coffee. I returned to losing immediately upon changing this one small habit.

In another article, we'll add more little changes for you to review and consider. As you can see, some small changes you can be simple and easy. Small changes can be painless too. As far as little changes count for you: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = Your own weight loss success!

    7 Weight Loss Tips

Okay, that's it, all done with the holidays, so lets get going on weight loss. No more bad nutrition, get back to your regular calorie intake and 6 small meals per day. You are eating 5-6 mini-meals per day, right? If not, get started, and here are some more weight loss tips.

    1. Eat more fruits and vegetables.

Get your carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables first, before using breads and pastas. You'll get far more nutrients and fiber, and fewer calories.

    2. Eat fiber

The average American falls far short of the fiber recommendations (of 25+ grams of fiber per day). Add an ounce of raw nuts to your daily food plan to get more fiber and to satisfy your appetite.

    3. Eat more protein

Protein fills you up and doesn't mess with your blood sugar, so you'll have more mental energy.

    4. Have something for breakfast.

While the exact reason isn't clear, breakfast eaters tend to be slimmer than non-breakfast eaters. Start your day with a whey protein shake and an apple if you are in a rush.

    5. Drink water

At least 8 cups per day. This will help fill you up and helps you avoid constipation.

    6. Exercise less, but harder.

Forget about long, slow cardio. Learn how to do interval training instead. This will boost your metabolism all day long.

    7. Use your bodyweight

There are hundreds of bodyweight exercises you can do at home, from beginner to advance.

And those are 7 tips to help you lose weight, burn fat, control your appetite, boost your metabolism and get the body you want.

    Healthy Weight Loss Secrets

Obesity is a now serious problem worldwide and it is expected to reach epidemic levels by the year 2020.

If you are one of them, you better watch out - as here are some of the diseases you're putting yourself at risk at the moment:

    1. Heart Disease

    2. Stroke

    3. Diabetes

    4. Cancer

    5. Arthritis

    6. Hypertension

The only way you can reduce your chances of getting these diseases is to lose some weight - while you it's still not too late to do so!

The are many methods available right now - both online and offline, that claims that you'll be able to lose X amount of weight after X amount of days - but most of them does not seem to work. These weight loss methods may include things like dietary drinks, foods or supplements.

Rather than taking in such dietary drinks, foods and supplements, its best if you rely on a healthy weight loss option which is proven to work, and also helps you lose weight for life, without any side-effects. The only thing you need to remember is that you need to set realistic goals, and that this whole weight loss process takes time, and NOT overnight.

Here are some tips you can use to lose some unwanted pounds the healthy way:

    1. Do Not Diet

Many people think by dieting, it will help them lose weight faster. But this is simply not true. By dieting, you're actually putting your body's immune system at risk, because your body does not have the required nutrition levels to function properly everyday.

Instead of dieting, you should choose the right food intakes - such as more fruits and vegetables, and choosing grilled foods over deep-fried ones.

    2. Start Your Day Right

DO NOT skip breakfast - breakfast is the most important meal of the day. By having a healthy breakfast in the morning, it will help jump-start your metabolism.

The foods you eat during breakfast will actually be used to burn fats all day long.

    3. Eat Small, Healthy Meals

5 small-serving snacks everyday is better than 3 hearty meals. By eating more frequently in small servings can prevent you from over-eating. This will also help to increase your body's metabolism rate and help your body burn calories faster.

    4. Have Realistic Weight Loss Goals

Set realistic weight loss goals - do not expect yourself to lose 100 pounds in 7 days. Weight loss is all about setting realistic goals, and having the correct mindset toward the whole process.

Once you've planned out your weight loss plans, stick to it and make sure you follow your own set of dieting rules closely. You have to be really disciplined to have a successful weight loss experience.

    5. Drink Lots Of Water

Your body needs sufficient water everyday to burn fat and keep your body cells hydrated and healthy. It is recommended that you drink between 6 and 8 glasses of water everyday.

    6. Watch Your Sugar Intake

You'll have to eat wisely as well to have a successful weight loss experience. Eat more fruits and vegetable, some bread, rice or pasta for the necessary carbohydrate fix that your body requires everyday, along with lean meat and protein-rich foods.

Avoid foods like sweets, sodas and pastries, as they contain a very high level of sugar.

    7. Watch Your Fat Intake

Eat foods like tuna, salmon and mackerel - as they all contain Omega-3 fats in them which is good for your heart.

    8. Exercise

Simple exercises such as walking for 20 minutes everyday, brisk walking, jogging, cycling, skating, or even home chores will help you shed some pounds.

Last but not least, I have to stress that healthy weight loss is not an overnight process, but it must be done over a period of time. You have to set realistic goals for yourself.

If you're just starting off, you should start slow - aim to lose 5 or 6 pounds first, then give yourself a short break before continuing to lose another 5 or 6 pounds.

Eat healthy, drink lots of water, get sufficient sleep and exercise - all these will increase your chances of being able to lose weight successfully, and improve your health - and resulting to a new, healthier you.

    Good luck.

10 Killer Tips for Rapid Weight Loss

In order to make the most of your weight loss program, finding the most effective ways to burn fat will maximize your results and minimize your waistline! Follow these 10 tips for fat burning if you want to lose weight and lead a healthier way of life.

    1.) Drink More Water

One of the best weight loss secrets is to ditch the sodas and stick to water! Experts say you should drink approximately eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and healthy. Instead of turning to calorie-laden or sugar-rich drinks, grab a refreshing glass of water. In addition to flushing toxins out of your system, drinking water encourages you to build muscle.

    2.) Eat More Meals

A traditional three-meals-a-day plan just will not cut it if you are in the market to burn fat. Your body is not able to metabolize large meals and will quickly turn any excess into fat. Many experts believe you should eat six small meals a day. Be sure you cut back on your food consumption at each meal, or else you will be doubling your intakeand doubling your fat storage!

    3.) Work Out with Weights

One great way to maximize the amount of fat you are burning is to add a weight program to your work out routine. Weight training will not only tone your physique, but will strengthen your body and improve your general health. Lifting weights will also burn calories and fat more quickly than traditional exercising, and it will also boost your metabolism.

    4.) Choose Protein

Choose protein-laden foods for boosting your metabolism and enabling your body to burn fat rapidly. In addition to burning fat, consuming a protein-enriched diet will help you rebuild muscle after work outs and maintain leanness of that muscle. Wisely choose proteins for your diet. Take great care to pick proteins low in fat so you do not consume extra calories.

    5.) Cut Calories Wisely

It may be tempting to drastically cut your calorie intake when starting a healthy lifestyle. Instead, use a step method when cutting your calorie intake to minimize risk. Reducing calories too quickly results in your body rapidly burning all available calories, which will lower your metabolism. Furthermore, you are more likely to maintain your healthy lifestyle through this step method.

    6.) Reward Yourself

When it comes to successfully dieting to burn the most fat, be sure to reward yourself. Everyone has temptations and favorite treatsso allow indulgence. You will be less likely to cheat on your new diet if you grant yourself small rewards. If you are a chocolate lover, treat yourself to a small square of chocolate or single chocolate kiss each evening.

    7.) Avoid Marathon Work Outs

The biggest mistake people make when looking to burn fat and lose weight is to have one long, extensive work out session. Instead, break up your work out plan into small chunks throughout the day. Take a brisk walk in the morning, enjoy a work out at lunch, and then exercise more in the evening. In addition to staying active all day long, breaking up your work out will better maintain your metabolism.

    8.) Mix It Up

Choosing to engage in a variety of quality exercises will keep your interest and best allow you to maintain your goal of burning fat. Instead of doing the same exercises each daymix it up! Opt to swim laps one day, jog another, and bike the next. Rotating your activities will not only allow you to experience a variety of athletics, it will also allow you to better tone your body.

    9.) Skip Happy Hour

For those individuals who want to burn fat quickly, avoid alcohol. Rich in sugars and carbohydrates, alcohol is a calorie-rich substance. These empty calories can add up quickly and take away from necessary nutrients that should be included in your daily diet. Furthermore, alcohol acts as an inhibitor for burning fat, allowing your body to store it more quickly.

10.) Try a Low GI Diet

A low GI diet is an excellent method of burning fat quickly. This diet encourages individuals to consume high amounts of foods with low rankings on the Glycemic Index. These foods are nutritious and will aid your body in burning fats and calories at a quicker pace. This diet includes many of your favorite fruits, vegetable, meats, dairy, and grain products.

Rev Up Your Metabolism For Faster Weight Loss

One you first start watching what you eat, the weight starts coming off easily. Then after a few weeks, the scale stops moving downward and you hit a plateau. Whats happening? Your metabolism is slowing down.

As you eat less to lose weight, your body goes into survival mode and your metabolism slows down. A slowed down metabolism means you are burning less calories. Yikes! Not exactly what you were trying to accomplish, right. After all the idea behing losing weight is to burn more calories to get rid of all that unwanted body fat.

Lets talk a bout some simple things you can start doing every day to speed your metabolism up. One of the first things you should do is to get some exercise. Any type of exercise that gets your heart rate up will also speeds up your metabolism not only while you exercise, but for hours afterwards. Find something you enjoy and can stick with for the long run. Go for a walk, chase your kids around the yard, get an exercise DVD, or join a local gym. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week.

The other strategy that seems to work really well for me in combination with walking every day is to eat several small meals throughout the day. My body doesn't feel starved so my metabolism doesn't slow down. This works best if you include some sort of protein with each meal. Lean meats, hardboiled eggs, protein shakes and lowfat cottage cheese are all great sources of protein. Combine them with some whole grain products or a piece of fruit for a small meal or snack.

Give these strategies a try and speed up your metabolism. Youll lose weight faster and youll feel better with all this extra energy. Once you get in the habit of exercising and eating smaller, more frequent meals, it will become easy to stick with and the benefit is obvious. You feel better and have a smaller waistline.

10 Step Plan for Screwing Up Your Weight Loss

I'm constantly hearing from readers who complain that if they take even a bite of cake, they're afraid there going to destroy their diet. News flash: Treating yourself to some cake or even eating a piece of chocolate is not going to destroy your diet.

But that got me to thinking. How could you really screw up your weight loss program? No, it's not something you would want to do, but if you had a list -- and oh how we love our lists-- on how to truly screw it up, maybe a little reverse psychology would take place.

So with that thought in mind, here's my sure-fire 10 step plan for screwing up any weight loss program. Follow this, and you'll be large and in charge in no time flat.

    • 1. Drink sodas, aka liquid candy. Drink a couple of these a day and watch your love handles grow like crazy.
    • 2. Frequent fast food spots. The word fast won't only be applied to food once you see how quickly your waist grows.
    • 3. Treat potato chips like vegetables. Eating 5 serving of veggies will never be so easy.
    • 4. Eat a big meal before you go to bed. Aside from nightmares, the food will quickly find a resting spot right in your tummy.
    • 5. Avoid drinking water. Great technique for retaining waste in your body and yes, that's exactly what I mean.
    • 6. Stuff yourself until you can't move. Need I say more?
    • 7. Super size every chance you get. Why settle for 8 ounces when 32 will do.
    • 8. Avoid exercise like the plague. Can't you just feel your metabolism slowing down?
    • 9. Eat fried foods. No only will you gain fat quickly, it is by far the best strategy for clogging your arteries.
    • 10. Never eat fruits and vegetables. They are just taking up space from all the ice cream you could be eating anyway.

There you go. Now that's how to really screw up your weight loss program.

Moral of the story: Lighten up. We all cheat on our diet now and then. It's what keeps us sane. Just do your body a favor and do it in moderation.

Natural Weight Loss is the Only Path to Permanent Ftiness

We as educated people need to start getting angry at all the junk aimed at us everyday. The average American sees thousands of ads each and every day for everything from diet pills to prescription drugs.

Most promise a quick cure for whatever ails us. The weight loss industry alone is estimated to be over $35 Billion dollars annually, so marketing and ads play a vital role in keeping us interested and buying.

Now we have come up with RLS, (restless leg syndrome). This will probably be a new "chronic condition" treated by an existing prescription drug, allowing it to continue generating profits longer

We need to start using our heads and understand what weight loss is and what it means. Losing weight alone is not the most important thing. We citizens of western countries are too fat. Losing fat and losing weight are two distinctly different things.

Also distinctly different is how we lose the weight / fat.

A pound of fat equals about 3500 calories. To burn 3500 calories you would need to reduce your daily caloric intake by 500 calories per day for one week, while remaining constant at your current activity level, or you could consume the same number of calories daily and exercise more to burn 500 calories per day. To burn 500 calories through exercise you would need to ride a stationary bike, as an example, for about 1 & hours per day at a rate of about 25 MPH average. Or you could do a combination of decreasing by 250 and burning 250.

The claims that you can "lose 30 pounds in 30 days" are weight not fat. To lose 30 pounds of fat in 30 days you would need to burn 105,000 calories in excess of what you eat, which I'm sure we all agree isn't likely.

Claims aimed at fast weight loss are telling you, you'll lose weight not fat. Fat is harmful to the body not weight per se.

Rapid weight loss through severely restricted caloric intake causes the body to react as if it were sick. It is conditioned to say "Oh Oh"; I'm in trouble I'd better conserve energy. I may not get more food for awhile.

Fat is stored energy. What the body then conserves is fat. It does exactly what you don't need or want it to do, it slows your metabolism, burns lean muscle mass for energy and conserves the fat.

The rapid weight loss that happens the first 30 days is water. Muscle contains about 3 times as much water as fat. So if you lose a pound of muscle you're losing 3 pounds of water with it.

That's why diets alone slow down, there's only so much water to get rid of.

You can't blame the ad agencies, or the diet program companies, people are being sold what they want to buy. They want a quick fix to a problem without sacrifice or change.

The truth is once you learn what the body needs and how it works there is no great need for sacrifice. You can eat nearly anything you want, just less of it, and exercise more.

We are just so conditioned to instant gratification, that we're always awaiting the next miracle drug to make us all look like Hollywood celebrities. The $35 billion is just giving us what we demand.

Obesity has grown by over 20% in the last decade, in spite of the fact we are spending $35 Billion a year on weight management products. Does that suggest to anyone maybe they aren't working?

Well it did to me so I did two years of research on the subject and was shocked at what I learned. It might do all of us some good to do the same research.
