Statistically speaking, if you are on a strict weight loss plan, you are likely to fail to achieve your goal. Lack of motivation, difficulty of the diet plan, temptation to cheat, cravings that overwhelm your will power and undermine your discipline, and lack of availability of the right foods, are all contributing factors to derailing you from your weight loss efforts.

Although low-calorie diets, low-carbohydrate diets, and low-fat diets have all been proven to be effective means of achieving weight loss, each one of these are very easily sabotaged for one or more of the above reasons. The 'No White Foods' Diet

There are many diet plans out there today, and the striking thing about a lot of them is how complex they are. Gone are the days of just counting calories. Todays diet plans come complete with a theory, a philosophy, a comprehensive diet plan, and exercise plan, and, more than likely, products that you can buy. In a way, thats a good thing it means that the theories behind these diets have been well thought out, and that the diets themselves are likely to promote good health as well as weight loss. On the other hand, there are some pitfalls to having and trying to follow a complex diet plan namely, its complicated and can be hard to follow!

How many of us really have time to learn a complex new way of eating? If you have to lose fifty or a hundred pounds, and your weight is severely affecting your health and wellbeing, you might be able to justify the time and expense. If its a matter of wanting to lose five, ten or twenty pounds, however, how likely are you to subscribe fully to a whole new way of eating? Not very likely, is the answer!

So here, then, is a quick, easy solution to your weight loss needs, if you are in need of a quick fix that doesnt require too much thought. Just stop eating white foods. Its as simple as that. If its white, dont eat it.

Of course, there is one notable exception you may want to make: Milk. Milk is white, and, especially if youre a woman, pregnant, or still growing, it may be detrimental to give up milk even for a short time. So lets modify that advice a little: no white foods that are solid. Or even, if you like, no white starches.

Thats what it really comes down to. If you do away with all the white starches white pasta, white rice, potatoes and replace them with whole grain choices, over time, you are almost guaranteed to lose weight. This isnt like the Atkins plan, that asks you to give up most carbohydrates. You can still eat brown rice, for example, and whole wheat bread and pasta. The white starches are refined, and they have the highest glycemic index. That means that they might cause insulin deficiency over time they can even lead you to develop diabetes in the long term. In the short term, these white starches cause you to pack on the pounds especially around your belly, which is the worst possible place to carry excess weight in terms of heart health.

If you want to go a little further with this plan, and lose weight a little more quickly, try giving up another category of white foods fats that are solid at room temperature. This means no butter or margarine (technically, butter is white, not yellow dairy companies dye it yellow to make it more appealing!) and no cheese (most cheese is white and giving up white cheese doesnt mean you should bulk up on cheddar!). Cutting out these high fat foods particularly if they happen to be an issue for you will let you lose weight a lot faster.

Of course, there are some white foods that are actually good for weight loss. Consider lean white chicken breast, for example, or white fish such as cod or halibut, or even egg white (the leanest part of the egg)! There is nothing much to be gained by avoiding those foods, and over the long term, you probably shouldnt. The point of the no white foods diet, though, is to give you a simple formula that you can apply anywhere. In a restaurant or at a special event no problem eat what you want, as long as it isnt white! There are no points to count up, no rules (except that one) to remember.

And heres the hidden benefit if youre not eating any white foods, it leaves more room for colorful foods that arent white vegetables, for example, particularly yellow, orange and dark green ones. These are much healthier for your heart and, indeed, your whole body than their white equivalent, potatoes and starch. Not all white foods deserve to be avoided, but the benefits of this simple and effective approach can be great nonetheless.

New Weight Loss Drug Makes Progress

One year ago millions of obese Americans were waiting to hear whether or not the Food and Drugs Agency would give approval to the diet drug rimonabant (Acomplia). Obviously there was huge disappointment when this approval was not given. Rimonabant never actually made it to the American market although it is thought that the patent holder will return for another bite of the cherry at a later date, armed with deeper clinical trial data.

There is, therefore, a great deal if excitement over Merck's new diet drug taranabant. The results from the second phase of testing were encouraging and now after another two years of testing it seems that the results for phase three may be equally exciting, though the final report is yet to be published.

Researchers announced that study participants taking varying doses of taranabant lost 8 to 14 pounds over a 12-week period. There was one question, however, which still remains unanswered. Does taranabant have less significant side effects than rimonabant? Both drugs work in a similar way, by targeting particular receptors in the brain. Acomplia, however, was not approved by the FDA after concerns were raised over its psychiatric side effects which may include depression and suicidal thoughts in patients prone to mental health problems. So how does taranabant compare? Initial feedback seems to suggest that between one-fifth and one-third of patients had experienced adverse side effects which included depressed mood, irritability, anger, mood swings and insomnia. Unlike rimonabant, however, patients reported no suicidal thoughts though it was conceded that the question had not been asked in a systematic way.

There will, of course, have to be more conclusive evidence provided before the FDA grants approval to the new drug. The company expects the phase III report to be published later this year and for taranabant to be submitted for FDA approval before the end of 2008. Taranabant will also be submitted to the European Medicines Agency although it is believed that Merck wants to get it approved in the US first.

Taranabant is a CB1 receptor reverse agonist which is slightly different form Acomplia, which is a CB1 receptor antagonist. Although they are both targeting the endocannabinoid system, the slightly different way in which they work could be crucial. Acomplia was approved for use in the UK in June 2006 and since then it has helped a number of people to lose weight but many have been disappointed by the lack of progress and ceased treatment after one or two months. Many also found the cost of this medication on private prescription to be prohibitive. The unfortunate thing is that all new weight loss drugs seem to get hyped up by the media and this ultimately leads to disappointment as the results, for most people, rarely match the hype. It cannot be emphasised enough that weight loss medications should only ever be used as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Obesity is a burgeoning problem in gthe West and medications that get regulatory approval do work but there has to be some effort on the part of the patient.

You've been eating right and trying to walk or jog each day, but it's getting boring. We've all been here before. A secret to weight loss is diverse set of exercises so that:

After you've performed exercises like the one above for some time, you may begin to see a decrease in results as your body is in better shape and has adjusted to a more active lifestyle. Now for resistance training, all you really need to do is to add some light weights to your workout. What this does is add more resistance to the muscles forcing them to work a little harder.

If you have a pool or have access to one, definitely consider swimming. It's fun, not too strenuous, and shows great results. There are even water aerobics which are simple exercises you can perform in the water. They'll show better results as well because of, you guessed it, resistance training. The only drawback to swimming is it takes more effort to prepare for, and if you don't have a pool you'll have to drive to the one closest to you which can take a large part of your day.

If you've ever tried to lose weight by starving yourself then you already know that not only does this not work, but it actually backfires, and usually makes you GAIN weight. Most people, particularly if they're hungry, eat relatively quickly not giving their stomach a chance to feel full when it really is and ending up "over-eating" without intending to. By slowing down your eating habits, you can lose weight without even changing what you eat.

4. No fizzy drinks. Soft drinks are renowned for their high sugar content, which definitely means more calories to get rid of later. In addition, they don't actually quench your thirst, so you need to keep drinking them when you're thirsty. Replace each time you would normally have a fizzy drink, with water and see the difference!

5. Sleep early. When you are sleeping, you are not eating. When you sleep early, it means you eat earlier, which gives your body a good chance to digest the food properly.

6. Move more. It's not necessary to spend hours at the gym working out, however you do have to do is more exercise than you do now. It doesn't have to be set exercises though. It could just be walking from the parking lot to the supermarket, but parking further away or it could be walking up the stairs instead of taking the escalator. Small things which, done on a regular basis, make a big change.

If you've watched any TV or done any web surfing lately, you've no doubt ran into countless ads for a new fad diet claiming it is the new magical cure to help you lose weight. Sure, you doubt their legitimacy, but you've tried everything else so you go for it, only to be let down once again. Here are some reasons to ditch these unreliable diets and stick with more tried and true methods.

It's easy to spot fad diets as they usually promise easy, immediate results. These diets usually sound too good to be true. They stress the importance of certain 'good foods' while eliminating certain 'bad foods' sometimes even an entire food group. Perhaps the easiest way to spot a fad diet is by the fact that they always seem to be trying to sell you something.

These fad diets also fail by not encouraging exercise. They promise quick results, with little contribution on your part besides sticking to the diet. Not only does this deter true weight loss, but in the long run it can be very unhealthy as lack of exercise leads to heart problems.

Often a fad diet relies on testimonials rather than scientific evidence. Some of the newer fad diets often base themselves on celebrity endorsement such as Oprah Winfrey and Anna Nicole Smith. Other times they will have numerous testimonials of people who have supposedly lost weight using the diet accompanied by dramatic before and after photos. Another gimmick is to include phrases such as "lose 10 pounds in 10 days."

These fad diets also will often show some form of scientific study and an oversimplified explanation. These studies ignore the differences in metabolisms and bio-chemistry. Often the studies were not conducted using the scientific method and contain no legitimate claims. Fad diets usually ignore or refute any true scientific evidence that disagrees with the program.

Then why is it that these diets seem to work? It depends on which one you are currently trying but this can often be linked to things such as water loss. Even when these diets do show quick results, the important thing to keep in mind is that these results are not permanent as it is not healthy to stay on them too long, nor would you want to given their blandness and strict rules, not to mention that the weight is usually gained back.

The AHA, American Heart Association, urges dieters not to go on fad diets for many reasons. One of which is that these fad diets usually force you to eat a single type of food, which keeps you from having a balanced diet.
